The Emergency Medicine Specialty Cluster consists of the Department of Pre-Hospital Emergency, the Department of Emergency Medicine,the Emergency Intensive Care Unit (EICU). This cluster is responsible for the critical task of managingtreating acutelife‑threatening conditions across the region. Centered around the establishment of multiple specialty centers, including a Chest Pain Center, Stroke Center, Trauma Center, Critical Maternal Care Center,Neonatal Rescue Center, the cluster has developed an integrated, multidisciplinary system linking all clinical departments to provide continuity of care for critically ill patients.
Emergency Medicine Department
Established in 1980, the Emergency Medicine Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of University of South China is recognized as a provincial clinical key specialty in Hunan. The current team includes one professor/chief physician, seven associate professors/associate chief physicians, 17 attending physicians,eight physicians. Among them are one PhD, two doctoral candidates,29 master’s degree holders. The department has over 100 beds: 30 resuscitation beds, 32 EICU beds—including six transitional ICU beds—and 45 general emergencyobservation beds. A full set of green‑channel protocols has been implemented for various critical conditions,the department provides uninterrupted, 24/7 emergency services. The specialty focuses on sepsis, acute poisoning,acute trauma.
Emergencycritical care revolve around the development of “five major centers,” emphasizing the motto “time is life, and time is function,”prioritizing an ECMO‑supported critical care system. The EICU focuses on sepsis as a key clinical conditionoperates a clinical research platform for emergency critical care. This research‑driven approach guides clinical practicepromotes the continuous advancement of the specialty.
Pre-hospital Emergency Department
The Pre-hospital Emergency Department, formerly known as the Medical Service Center, was established in September 2000. It has since developed a pre-hospital emergency model, responsible for on-site emergency rescue in Hengyang City, responding to public emergencies, providing medical support for various events,facilitating inter-hospital transfers within the Hengyang region. The department operates under the comprehensive scheduling platform of Hengyang Citys "120" Emergency Command Center, adhering to the principles of "responding to emergencies, proximity, patient preference,hospital capacity," ensuring that emergency tasks within the city are responded to within 5 minutes of receiving the command.
The department currently employs 35 staff members. The medical team consists of 10 members, including 1 with a senior professional title, 1 with an associate senior title, 4 at the intermediate level,4 physicians. The nursing team includes 10 members, with 1 associate chief nurse, 5 charge nurses, 3 nurses,1 staff nurse. Additionally, the department has 12 drivers3 operators.
