High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Ablation Therapy (HIFU) is a non-invasive ablative technique in which extracorporeal low-intensity ultrasound waves are focused onto a targeted internal area under medical imaging guidance. The focused waves create a high-energy focal point that induces coagulative necrosis of diseased tissue in a short time, while preserving surrounding healthy tissue. The technique achieves conformal ablation of the entire target region—akin to using a magnifying glass to focus sunlight—thus enabling the “remote destruction of tumors” without surgical incisionspuncture. It offers a completely noninvasive way to “resect” internal lesions from outside the body.

Currently, HIFU equipment has been approved for market access in 36 countriesregions, with more than 50 specialized focused ultrasound surgical centers established globally. Over 2,300 medical institutions worldwide have adopted HIFU clinically. The technology holds over 300 internationaldomestic patentshas undergone clinical validation by authoritative institutions, including the University of Oxford in the UKothers in over ten countries, demonstrating its safetyefficacy.

Indications:

1. Uterine fibroids

2. Adenomyosis

3. Cesarean scar pregnancy

4. Placenta accreta

5. Abdominal wall endometriosis

6. Candidates with successful pre-HIFU localization

Technical Advantages:

1. Noninvasive:

①No incisionbleeding; the uterus can be preserved;

②General anesthesia is not required; the procedure can be performed under analgesiasedation;

③Radiation-free, with minimal discomfort to the patient.

2. Definitive Therapeutic Effect:

①Inducing coagulative necrosis of fibroids, which shrinkeven disappear post-treatment;

②Short contraceptive interval; pregnancy may be planned 3–6 months after the procedure;

③Recurrence rates are comparable to,even lower than, those following surgical myomectomy.

3. Rapid Recovery:

①Short hospitalizationtreatment time; most patients can ambulate the same day;

②The majority of patients are discharged the day after treatment.

4. Cost-Effective:

①Total cost is approximately 50% lower than that of openminimally invasive surgery;

②HIFU treatment is covered under the Hunan Provincial Medical Insurance Program.

Implementation at the Hospital:

As of April 2025, the HIFU Center at the First Affiliated Hospital of University of South China has successfully treated 720 patients, including 271 with uterine fibroids367 with adenomyosis, achieving excellent clinical outcomeshigh patient satisfaction. The center is distinguished by its focus on “micro-non-invasive therapy”adheres to the philosophy: “Treatment—with the least harm to patients.” Through efficient, high-quality clinical servicesscientifically structured treatment plans, the center strives to foster a collaborative doctor–patient relationshipdeliver premium healthcare experiences to every patient.
