Advancing Specialty ExpertiseDriving High-Quality Development. In 2002, Tang Jian took the lead in introducing artificial liver support treatment in the Hengyang region, central China’s Hunan Province, opening a new path to recovery for patients with liver failure. Over the past two decades, he has performed more than 2,000 artificial liver procedures, reducing the mortality rate of liver failure patients from 70% to 20–30%.
In 2016, he helped establish the first Infectious Diseases ICU in Hunan Province. Over the past decade, the ICU has admitted more than 1,000 critically ill patients with severe liver diseasetuberculosis, offering a vital lifeline to patients in critical condition. In 2021, he actively promoted interventional therapies for cirrhosisliver cancer, enabling the department to provide full-course management ranging from hepatitis, cirrhosis to liver cancer,delivering comprehensive care for liver disease patients across the region.
Driving Medical Progress through Scientific ResearchInnovation. Tang Jian has ledparticipated in four projects funded by the Hunan Provincial Natural Science Foundationpresided over five research projects at municipaldepartmental levels. He has published more than 10 academic papers, including four in SCI-indexed journals. Among his research achievements, the project on “half-volume plasma exchange combined with plasma adsorption therapy for patients with liver failure” stands out. In response to plasma shortages, he was the first to propose using only half the conventional plasma volume in artificial liver support treatment. This approach not only reduced plasma demand but also significantly shortened patients’ waiting time for plasma, enabling earlier treatmentgreatly improving the prognosis of patients with liver failure.
Training the Future Medical Professionals through TeachingMentorship. Dedicated to cultivating medical students for the Partythe nation, Tang Jian has remained committed to frontline teaching at the Clinical College for over 20 years, making significant contributions to the transmission of medical knowledge. In recognition of his excellence in teaching, he was granted an “Excellent Teacher” Award by the University of South China in 20122014,won first prize in the university’s Young Faculty Teaching Competition in 2012. With his rigorous teaching approachextensive clinical experience, he has trained generations of outstanding medical professionals.
Bravely Shouldering Responsibility to Safeguard Public Health. In the face of public health emergencies, Tang Jian has stepped forward without hesitation, risking exposure to infectionplacing duty above self. During the SARS outbreak in 2003, he was the first physician at the hospital to wear protective gearenter the isolation ward. In 2012, when a hand-foot-and-mouth disease broke out in Hengyang, he was entrusted with the critical task of establishing a dedicated ward. After more than a month of intense efforts, the team successfully treated over 500 pediatric cases, including more than 40 severe casesover 20 critically ill children. At the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak in early 2020, he was once again the first to report for duty in the fever screening clinic. Through his tireless dedicationselfless service, Tang Jian has exemplified a physician’s reverence for lifeunwavering commitment to duty.
